UMass Boston takes two from PSU Baseball
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts Boston swept a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon at Panther Park, 4-3 and 15-7. UMB improves to 13-15 overall and 4-7 in LEC games, while PSU had its losing streak extended to nine games and fell to 8-21 overall and 3-9 in the conference.
Sophomore Tom Michael (Manchester, N.H./West) smacked a pinch-hit triple for UMB in the seventh inning of the opener and came home with the eventual game-winning run. PSU out-hit the visitors 14-7 in the first game, but the Panthers could score only three runs, stranding 15 runners on the basepaths. UMB touched three PSU pitchers for 15 runs on 20 hits to take the nightcap.
Seniors Sean Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) and Jaime Soto (Peabody, Mass.) led the Beacons in the opener with two hits apiece. Sophomore Ryan Oshima (La Jolla, Calif.) drove in Michael with the lead run in the seventh inning. Freshman Mike Andriano (Massapequa, N.Y.) went eight innings on the mound, giving up three runs, and improved to 5-2, and junior Nick Conway (Methuen, Mass.) worked the ninth for his first save.
Freshman Jared LeClaire (Portsmouth, N.H./Winnacunnet) had three hits for PSU in the opener, including a pair of doubles, while sophomore Marc McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) also collected three hits, including a two-bagger. Senior Craig Carpenter (Nashua, N.H.), junior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) and sophomore Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) recorded two hits apiece.
Senior Bob Kniffen (Halifax, Mass.) had four hits, including a double, to lead the 20-hit Beacon attack in the nightcap. Ketterer, Oshima and sophomore Chris Oram (Lynn, Mass.) each contributed three hits, with Oram and freshman Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, Fla.) each hitting their first career home run. Conway worked the first six innings on the mound to earn the win, and sophomore Anthony Lauretto (Pembroke, Mass.) pitched the last three innings to pick up a save.
Hodge added three more hits for PSU in the nightcap, while senior Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) contributed a three-run double. Junior John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.) chipped in with a pair of doubles.
Both teams play again on Sunday. PSU host Mass. Maritime in a non-conference doubleheader at Panther Park (12:00 p.m.) and UMB visits Southern Maine for an LEC game (1:00 p.m.).
