NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Plymouth State University baseball team exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning Wednesday afternoon and went on to post a 17-2 non-conference victory over Norwich University at Garrity Field.
Plymouth State (10-22) seemed to be headed to a shutout victory when Norwich (5-24) posted two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Panthers scored twice in the first inning and added three more in the fourth to make it 5-0 before putting the game out of reach in the fifth. PSU improves to 10-22 this spring, while the Cadets drop to 5-24.
The 17 runs for PSU were the most in a game since the Panthers defeated New England College, 18-8, on May 4, 2005.
Junior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) led the Panthers' 16-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with a double, triple and three runs scored. Senior Dylan Mullin (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) drove in three runs apiece, and freshman Jared LeClaire (Portsmouth, N.H.) and senior Craig Carpenter (Nashua, N.H.) had two hits and two RBI each.
PSU sophomore reliever Ryan Hannon (Bow, N.H.) recorded his first collegiate win, while Norwich senior hurler John Healy took the loss. Hannon pitched three scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out two.
The Cadets will be back in action on Thursday with a doubleheader at Lyndon State at 2:00 pm. The Panthers will also be back on the diamond on Thursday with a home doubleheader against New England College (2:00 p.m.)
