PSU Baseball drops pair to Salve Regina
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Salve Regina University scored 20 runs on 25 hits and kept Plymouth State University hitters off the scoreboard Sunday evening, shutting out the Panthers 8-0 and 12-0 in a baseball doubleheader at the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
Plymouth State bats, which pounded out 23 hits in a doubleheader split on Saturday against the University of Scranton, fell silent Sunday against Salve. PSU managed six hits in the opener, two each by senior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) and junior Josh Roberti (Cranston, R.I.), but couldn't push a run across. The Panthers were limited to three hits in the nightcap, including a last-ditch effort in the last inning when junior Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) and senior John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.) reached on singles, but the next two batters struck out and flew out to end the night.
Freshman John Andersch (Concord, N.H.) was the Panther starter in the opener, working four innings and surrendering seven runs while striking out five. Junior Chris Welch (South Burlington, Vt.) started the nightcap but was knocked out in the fourth inning and took the loss.
PSU, 1-3, looks to rebound with two more games on Monday in Florida with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader against Amherst College.
