FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State University baseball team got a pair of complete-game pitching efforts on Thursday while the offense reached double digits in both games in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Minnesota-Morris, 10-5 and 10-1, in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
Sophomore lefty John Andersch (Concord, N.H.) went the distance for PSU in the opener while the bats provided 10 runs on 10 hits, and senior right-hander Taylor Ketchum (Fairhaven, Mass.) did the same in the nightcap while his teammates delivered 10 runs on 12 hits. PSU is now 3-5 on the Florida trip, with two games left to play, while UMM is winless through eight contests this spring.
Andersch allowed only one run on four hits through the first six innings before tiring and surrendering four runs in the last of the seventh. He is now 1-0 on the season, allowing seven hits and four earned runs while striking our four. Ketchum scattered seven hits in the second game without walking a batter and striking out a career-high 11. He is 1-1 this spring.
The Panthers jumped on the Cougars for three runs in the first inning of the opener, and followed with two more in the second and third innings. Freshman Mike Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) keyed the first-inning rally with an RBI single, while sophomore Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) added a run-scoring single in the second, and junior Anthony Fallacaro (Niskayuna, N.Y.) smacked a two-run double in the third. Fallacaro tacked on an RBI hit in the fifth inning and Lausberg tripled in the sixth and scored on a single by senior Jim VanGyzen (Glocester, R.I./Ponaganset).
The hot bats continued for PSU in the nightcap while Ketchum sailed along on the mound. The Panthers scored three runs in the second inning and took complete control with five runs in the third. Sophomore Matt Koban (Bradford, N.H./Kearsarge) put PSU on the board in the second with an RBI double, and following a sacrifice fly by sophomore Grant Livingston (Niantic, Conn.), junior Garrett Brewer (Rutland, Vt.) added an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Livingston added another sac-fly in the third inning, and Lausberg followed with a two-run single. The rally continued with Brewer hitting a run-scoring double and VanGyzen adding an RBI single. Cappiello hit a triple in the fourth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Marc McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.), and Cappiello rounded out the scoring in the fifth inning with an RBI single.
PSU wraps up its 10-game Florida trip on Friday with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against Plattsburgh State (N.Y.)
