Plymouth State Baseball tops Daniel Webster

(Box Score

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) and sophomore Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) collected three hits apiece Monday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Daniel Webster College, 7-2, in non-conference baseball action at Panther Park.

Kleponis had three singles, a stolen base, a run scored and drove in two, while Lausberg cracked a double among his three hits and scored a run to lead the Panther offense.  Eight of the nine PSU starters recorded at least one hit to highlight a 14-hit attack.  PSU wrapped up a seven-game home stand with its third straight victory, improving to 12-17 overall, while DWC fell to 4-21.

Sophomore lefthander John Andersch (Concord, N.H.) recorded the victory for PSU, improving to 3-2 on the season.  He pitched five innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out six.  Seniors Nick Englert (North Woodstock, N.H.) and Taylor Ketchum (Fairhaven, Mass.) and freshman Joe Hudson (Greenfield, Mass.) combined to throw four innings of no-hit, no-run relief.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three straight hits by sophomore Zach Cantor (Windham, Maine), junior Rob Leary (Litchfield, N.H.) and freshman Kory Kiro (Goffstown, N.H.) and an infield grounder by junior Charles Manning (Riverside, R.I.).  That would end up as the extent of the Eagles offense.

Senior Jim VanGyzen (Glocester, R.I.) put PSU on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI triple.  The Panthers took the lead for good in the third, when Lausberg and Kleponis opened the inning with a double and single, and came around to score on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly, respectively. Kleponis also added a run-scoring single in the fourth inning to put PSU ahead, 4-2.

The Panther pulled away with two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth. Freshman Marcus Joyce (Scituate, Mass.) doubled home a run in the fifth and then scored on a single by Josh Roberti (Cranston, R.I.), and senior Marc McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) doubled in the sixth inning and scored on a single by freshman Mike Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) to close out the scoring.

PSU returns to the diamond Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Lyndon State College (2:00 p.m.)  Daniel Webster plays a New England Collegiate Conference twinbill Tuesday at Mitchell College (2:00 p.m.)
