Plymouth State Baseball falls twice to Chicago
VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Plymouth State University baseball team took two games on the chin Monday afternoon to the University of Chicago, 9-6 and 18-3, in the Central Florida Invitational.
The Panthers are looking for their first win of the season after four games, and will try again Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in a make-up doubleheader against Trinity College, which was postponed by rain on Sunday.
PSU scored in five of the seven innings of the opener against Chicago. The score was tied 3-3 after three innings and 4-4 in the fifth, but a four-run fifth inning by the Maroons proved to be the difference.
Junior Matt Koban (Bradford, N.H./Kearsarge) recorded a pair of RBIs for PSU, including a sixth-inning double, and junior Grant Livingston (Niantic, Conn./Saint Bernard) and freshman Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet Regional) also knocked in runs for the Panther offense. Freshman Rew Wilson (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) reached base in all four plate appearances with a single, a double, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Junior John Andersch (Concord, N.H.) started on the mound and worked four innings, striking out six, and freshman Matt Llewelyn (Northfield, Mass.) pitched the final two innings.
Sophomore Justin Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) provided the Panther highlights in the lop-sided nightcap with two doubles and an RBI, and junior Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) added a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Joe Hudson (Greenfield, Mass.) started and worked four innings, taking the loss, and freshmen Kevin Allard (Reading, Mass.) and Jon Whalen (Attleboro, Mass.) both pitched in relief.
