PSU Baseball upended by Castleton
CASTLETON, Vt. – Matt Eisenhuth (Townshend, Vt.) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI Wednesday afternoon to lead the Castleton State College baseball team past Plymouth State University, 9-3, in non-conference action.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Castleton’s offense exploded for five runs and never looked back. The Spartans improve to a program-best 30-12 overall on the season, while the Panthers fall to 9-28 overall.
PSU took a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the first and fourth innings. Freshman Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass.) led off the game with a walk and later scored on an infield groundout. Freshman David Tammaro (Cheshire, Conn.) doubled home a run in the fourth to give the Panthers a two-run lead.
Castleton rallied to take the lead in the fifth inning. With runners at the corners and one out, Jack Lancelin (Chatham, N.Y.) knocked home David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H.) with an infield single. Eisenhuth gave Castleton a 3-2 lead with a two-run bases loaded single to right center field. Kurt Hewes (Poultney, Vt.) extended the lead to 5-2 notching a two-run single to left centerfield to cap the scoring.
The Spartans tacked on two more runs in the sixth as Billy Manley (Lowell, Mass.) scored from third base on a wild pitch and teammate Garrett Bissonnette (Lyman, Maine) deposited an RBI single to centerfield plating Eisenhuth for a 7-2 advantage.
Plymouth State cut into the lead in the top of the seventh as Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, N.H.) singled and then scored on a throwing error . Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.) stroked his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the Castleton half of the seventh for a 9-3 gap.
Zielinski finished the day with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate for Castleton, including two RBI and two runs scored, Lancelin went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one run driven in and Hewes was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Junior Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Panthers while sophomore Marcus Joyce (Scituate, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Panthers wrap up the season on Saturday with a Little East Conference doubleheader at Panther Park against Western Connecticut State University (11:00 a.m.)
The Spartans return to action on Saturday against SUNYIT in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship Tournament in Rome, N.Y. Castleton will play a best of three series with the chance to earn an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
