Plymouth State Baseball downs Daniel Webster

Panthers have won five of their last six games

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Rob Madonna (Cranston, R.I.) went 4-for-5 and sophomore Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, N.H.) knocked in three runs Monday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Daniel Webster College, 10-2, in a non-conference college baseball game at Panther Park.

Senior Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) picked up the victory for the home team, pitching eight innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out five.  PSU won for the fifth time in its last six games to improve to 10-20 on the season.

Senior Zach Cantor (Windham, Maine) and sophomore Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) had two hits apiece for the visitors, but Daniel Webster dropped its fourth in a row and fell to 16-11.

Plymouth State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning and three runs in the third.  Junior Justin Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the third inning and Cosgrove followed with a two-run single.

Daniel Webster cut the deficit in half with two runs in the fifth inning. Senior Chris McKenzie (Burlington, Mass.) doubled and came around to score on a single by sophomore Josh Chasse (Haverhill, Mass.), and Chasse then scored on a PSU infield error.  The Panthers tacked on one run in the bottom of the fifth on Madonna’s RBI single, and then put the game out of reach with five runs in the last of the eighth.

PSU will be back on the diamond Tuesday, hosting Castleton State College in a non-conference encounter.  Daniel Webster plays a New England Collegiate Conference game Wednesday at Lesley College.
