Cosgrove leads Panther rally in nightcap
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Brendan Cosgrove went 4-for-4 with knocked in four runs in the second game of a baseball doubleheader Monday to lead Plymouth State University to a 12-6 victory and a split against Knox College (Ill.) on the second day of action in the Gene Cusic Classic.
Knox won the opener, 15-8, before Cosgrove led PSU on a 16-hit attack in the nightcap. The Panthers are now 2-2 on the Florida trip and 6-2 overall; Knox is now 4-7.
The Prairie Fire put up crooked numbers in four of the first six innings to take the first game. Senior Ryan McIntosh led the Panther offense with three hits and three RBI, and freshman David Foote contributed a two-run single.
Trailing 3-2 after three innings of the nightcap, the Panthers came back to tie the game with a run in the fourth, and put the game away with five runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth.
Joining Cosgrove with strong games at the plate were senior Luke Merrill and sophomore Tucker Regan; Merrill had two hits and three RBI and Regan added two hits and two RBI. Junior David Tammaro and senior Mike Cappiello also had two hits each.
Junior Rew Wilson allowed five hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings to record his second win of the season, and sophomore Spencer Webb pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless ball to post his third save.
PSU plays a doubleheader Tuesday at 10 a.m. against SUNY New Paltz.
