Panthers head home after losses to Colby
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The annual trip to Florida for the Plymouth State University baseball team ended on a down note Saturday as the Panthers were swept by Colby College by scores of 17-2 and 12-6. The Panthers wind up the trip with three wins in 10 games and bring a 7-7 overall record back to New England.
Colby scored multiple runs in five of the seven innings off four Panther hurlers in the opener to run away with the win. PSU's only two runs came in the first inning after freshman Paul Reny and senior Ryan McIntosh led off with walks and senior Rew Wilson delivered a two-out, two-run single. That was one of only three Panther hits in the game.
The Mules plated three runs in the first inning of the nightcap and pulled away with a six-spot in the fourth inning. All six runs came with two outs, capped by a three-run home run by senior Brendan Gallagher.
PSU got on the board with three runs in the fifth inning, as Reny cracked an RBI triple and junior Steve Beard added a run-scoring double. After Colby tacked on three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, Plymouth State closed out the scoring in the seventh with three runs, highlighted by a two-run single by McIntosh.
PSU begins the New England portion of the 2012 slate next Saturday, Mar. 31, with the Little East Conference debut at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
