Cappiello, Regan lead Panther offense
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Mike Cappiello had three hits and knocked in three runs Friday afternoon as the Plymouth State University baseball team won its home opener over Rivier College, 13-4, in a non-conference game at Panther Park.
Cappiello drove in one in a six-run third inning rally as the Panthers came back from a 3-0 deficit, and added a two-run double in the fourth inning. Sophomore Tucker Regan also collected two hits and two RBI as PSU improved to 9-8 overall.
Juniors John DiBenedetto and Aramis Velez each had two hits for the Raiders (1-22), including a double each. DiBenedetto knocked in two runs and Velez brought home one.
Rivier took a 3-0 lead on a first-inning RBI single by DiBenedetto and back-to-back RBI doubles in the third inning by DiBenedetto and Velez. PSU rallied to take the lead for good with six runs in the bottom of the third inning; freshman Paul Reny and Cappiello put PSU on the board with RBI singles; senior Luke Merrill followed with an RBI double; and junior Rew Wilson capped the rally with a two-run double.
The Panthers tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning. Cappiello drove in two with a double, Wilson brought one home with a sacrifice fly, and Regan added an RBI double.
Wilson picked up the win in relief for PSU, pitching two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three. Freshman Lucas Palma started and took the loss for Rivier.
PSU is back to Little East Conference action Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Rhode Island College. Rivier plays Daniel Webster College Tuesday at Holman Stadium in Nashua.
