PSU Baseball drops LEC doubleheader at RIC

Wilson homers to provide highlight for Panthers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College used stellar pitching to take both ends of a baseball doubleheader with Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon, 10-3 and 5-2, in Little East Conference action at Anchorman Field.

Sophomore pitcher C.J. Tsoumakas was lights out for RIC in game one, while freshman pitcher Dylan Cummiskey was just as dominant in game two. The Anchormen improved to 15-8 overall and 3-1 in the LEC, while PSU slipped to 9-10 and 1-3.

RIC jumped out to an early lead with three runs on the bottom of the first and took a commanding 9-0 lead with a single run in the third inning and five runs in the fourth.  PSU made a bit of a comeback with three runs in the top of the eighth when seniors Mike Cappiello and Luke Merrill reached on two-out singles and junior Rew Wilson launched a three-run homer over the left field fence. Merrill finished with three hits for PSU while junior Steve Beard had two doubles and a walk in four trips to the plate.

Senior lefthander Bobby Chatfield got saddled with the loss (1-3). Freshman Robbie Greenleaf had a strong relief appearance, working four innings and allowing just one run on three hits.

Cummiskey and PSU senior Jonathan Bishop locked up in a scoreless duel in the second game until RIC struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Sophomore Alex Verrecchia cracked a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch.  The Anchormen added two more runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single by freshman Dean Grasso and a PSU throwing error.

PSU didn't get on the board until the ninth inning when Cappiello reached on an error and Merrill doubled, and they came home on an infield ground out and a wild pitch.

The Panthers play at home on Monday against Norwich University; Rhode Island College plays at Johnson & Wales on Monday.
