Plymouth State Baseball outslugs Norwich

Cappiello leads 20-hit attack for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Mike Cappiello went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and five batted in Monday afternoon as Plymouth State University outslugged Norwich University, 17-7, in a non-conference baseball game at Panther Field.

Cappiello was one of five Panthers with three hits apiece in the game.  He smacked a first-inning single and collected two hits and all five RBI in the second inning as PSU put 14 runs on the board in the frame.  Cappiello had a two-run double his first trip to the plate in the second inning, and drilled a three-run homer to right his second time up, his team-leading fourth round-tripper of the season.

The Panthers led 17-0 after two innings but Norwich came alive with six runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth before the game was stopped after seven by the 10-run rule.

Senior Luke Merrill also finished with three hits for PSU, including a double and a two-run home run, his second of the season; junior Rew Wilson was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, recording a single, double and triple and knocking in three runs; sophomore Tucker Regan had a double and two RBI singles in his three trips to the plate; and sophomore Rob Madonna had two doubles and a single while knocking in three.

Sophomore Jeff Runnals pitched the first four innings for PSU, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk to record his first win of the season.

Sophomore Nicholas Gendron led the Cadets with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.  Classmate Charles Schaub had two hits and an RBI, and juniors J.J. Losco and Jonathan Philbrook each had RBI singles.

PSU is right back in action Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. with a Little East Conference match-up at rival Keene State College.  Norwich returns home to host Albertus Magnus College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
