Strong pitching leads Panthers
YAPHANK, N.Y. – Senior Rew Wilson (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) and junior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood) each tossed four innings of shutout baseball Sunday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University baseball team to a sweep of City College of New York in the season debut at Baseball Heaven.
Wilson allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five to earn the win as PSU captured the opener, 13-1, and Runnals surrendered four hits and a walk while fanning six as the Panthers took the nightcap, 5-1. PSU opens the season at 2-0 while CCNY is 0-6.
PSU also got a strong performance from the bullpen. Sophomore Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, Mass./Bishop Guertin) and junior Tucker Regan (Niantic, Conn./Niantic) combined to strike out eight batters in three inning of relief in the opener, and sophomore Josh Young (Somersworth, N.H.) and juniors Spencer Webb (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) and Ryan Wakefield (Sanbornton, N.H./Winnisquam) combined to toss three innings of one-hit, one-run ball in the nightcap.
Runnals also led the PSU offense with three hits and four runs batted in, while sophomore Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine).also collected three hits. Junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H./ South) had two doubles and scored four runs for the Panthers in the twinbill.
PSU will be back on the diamond for their spring trip to Fort Myers, Florida, beginning with a doubleheader against Lasell College on Sunday, Mar. 17.
