PSU Baseball suffers first loss in Fla. to UW-Oshkosh

Second game of doubleheader suspended by rain

            FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Doug Beattie (Escanaba, Mich.) and sophomore Michael Polcyn (Ripon, Wis.) each had two RBI Monday as the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh topped Plymouth State University, 6-4, in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Baseball Classic.

            Game two of the doubleheader was postponed by rain with PSU leading 1-0 in the second inning. The game will resume Tuesday afternoon (March 19).

            Beattie cracked a two-run single in the first inning to give the Titans a 2-0 lead. Polcyn highlighted a four-run rally in the third inning with a long two-run homer to right field. Sophomore Michael Swift (Kenosha, Wis.) added a run-scoring single later to make it 6-0.

            The Panthers (4-1) got on the board with a two-run single from junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H./ South) in the third frame. Senior Dave Tammaro (Cheshire, Conn.) added another single to score Cox and pull the Panthers to within 6-3.  PSU rounded out the scoring in the fifth inning when sophomore Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine) came home on Cox's infield groundout.

            Beattie recorded three hits for UW-Oshkosh (5-0), while Paul Reny led PSU with two.

            Making his first career start, freshman Taylor Ditter (Sheboygan, Wisc.) earned the win with five innings of one-run ball. Senior Matt Wells (Little Chute, Wis.) got the save while retiring six of the seven men he faced.

            Senior Rew Wilson (Niantic, Conn.) pitched all seven innings for PSU, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits.

            The Panthers will play Southern Vermont in a doubleheader Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., followed by the resumption of the PSU-Oshkosh game.
