PSU Baseball doubles up Western Connecticut

Wilson posts win and save to lead Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior right-hander Rew Wilson (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) was dominant on the mound Saturday afternoon, posting a win and a save in relief to lead the Plymouth State University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Western Connecticut State University, 4-2 and 6-3, in Little East Conference action at Panther Park.

Wilson, the reigning LEC and ECAC New England Pitcher of the Week, worked two-and-a-third innings in hitless relief in the opener, walking one and striking out two to post his first save of the season.  He came on in relief in the fourth inning of the nightcap and completed the game, pitching five-and-two-thirds innings of one-hit, no-walk baseball while striking out nine.  For the day, he allowed just one hit, a ninth-inning infield dribbler in the nightcap, and one walk in eight innings with 11 strikeouts, upping his record to 3-2.

PSU improved to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the Little East, while Western Conn. fell to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.  The Colonials, who came into the day ranked second in the LEC with a .317 team batting average, were held to five runs on nine hits in the twin bill.

The Panthers took an early lead in the opener with single runs in the second and third innings.  Sophomore Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) doubled home a run in the second inning and junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H./South) singled home a run in the third.  The Colonials answered with solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game as senior Bill Eannotti (Shelton, Conn.) tripled and scored on a single by sophomore Scott Conetta (Garden City, N.Y.) and junior Bobby Coyne (Clinton, Conn.) delivered an RBI single.

PSU pulled ahead in the sixth when freshman Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) singled home a run, and Cox added a clutch, two-out single in the seventh to bring in an insurance run.

Sophomore Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, Mass./Bishop Guertin) recorded the win for PSU, pitching into the seventh inning and allowing two runs on six hits and a walk, striking out four. Senior Chris Alberto (Trumbull, Conn.) went the distance for Western, striking out eight, but suffered the loss (2-2).

The Panthers jumped on top 2-0 in the first inning of the nightcap when Cox cracked an RBI double and senior Dave Tammaro (Cheshire, Conn.) followed with a sacrifice fly. Senior Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass.) added a sac fly in the second as PSU pulled ahead, 3-1.

Western got on the board in the third inning on an RBI single by Coyne, but PSU got its three-run lead back in the fourth when senior Ryan McIntosh (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) doubled in a run.  Eannotti doubled home a run for the Colonials in the fourth inning and then scored on an infield grounder to cut the deficit to 4-3.

PSU tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Cox, who finished the second game with three hits and three RBI and wrapped up the day with five hits and five RBI.

Plymouth State will be back on the diamond Wednesday with a non-conference affair at Salem State University.  Western Conn. is scheduled to host Clark University on Sunday, field conditions permitting. The PSU-WCSU games were moved to Plymouth due to unplayable conditions in Danbury.
