UMass Dartmouth takes two from PSU Baseball

Panthers come up empty vs. Corsairs

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University baseball team dropped a Little East Conference doubleheader to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday at Panther Park, falling to the Corsairs by scores of 6-4 and 9-3.

PSU took a 4-2 lead into the ninth inning of the opener, but the Corsairs produced a four-run rally to pull out the win.  UMD took the nightcap in a game shortened to six innings due to darkness.  The doubleheader started two hours late due to wet field conditions caused by Friday's wintry mix.

The starting pitchers in the opener, PSU sophomore Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and UMD junior Karney Boff (Dighton, Mass.), threw shutout baseball the first four innings.  The Panthers got on the board with three runs in the last of the fifth, as freshman Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) brought home a run with a fielder's choice and junior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) cracked a two-run triple down the right field line.

The Corsairs got on the board in the sixth inning when sophomore Alex Newton (Saco, Maine) doubled and came around to score on a hit by senior Matt Worden (New Bedford, Mass.).  PSU came right back with a run in the last of the sixth on a fielder's choice RBI by sophomore Dan Armstrong (Danville, N.H.) to pull ahead, 4-2.

UMD's four-run rally in the ninth inning turned the game around.  Sophomore Luke Bomback (Swansea, Mass.) opened the scoring with a bases-loaded single.  One out later, Worden delivered a two-run double, and sophomore Nate Farias (Fall River, Mass.) brought home the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Junior Wayne Bolz (Billerica, Mass.) earned the win in relief for UMD, and freshman Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.) retired the Panthers in order in the ninth to post his first save.

The visitors pulled ahead 4-0 in the nightcap with one run in the first inning and three unearned runs in the second.  Farias and freshman Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, R.I.) clouted RBI doubles in the rally, and freshman Connor Shaw (Goffstown, N.H.) added a run-scoring single.

PSU pulled to within a run with a three-run rally in the bottom of the third.  Junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H./South) singled home a run and senior Dave Tammaro (Cheshire, Conn.) followed with a two-run single.

The Corsairs put the game away with three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. Sophomore Ryan Medeiros (Achushnet, Mass.) had an RBI double and sophomore Greg Aggostini (Dighton, Mass.) added an RBI single, while senior Tyler White (Westport, Mass.) had a sac fly in the fifth.

Sophomore Nick Fuller (New Bedford, Mass.) earned the win for UMD with a complete-game effort, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out 10 batters in six innings of work.

Plymouth State is right back on the diamond Sunday with a non-conference doubleheader at Panther Park against Lyndon State College.   UMD plays a non-conference twin bill Monday at Tufts.
