PSU Baseball sweeps twin bill at Colby-Sawyer
Panthers back on track with non-conference wins
NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Plymouth State University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Colby-Sawyer College Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 7-0 and taking the nightcap, 6-1.
Senior Ryan McIntosh (Lincoln, N.H.) had two hits in each game to lead the Panther offense, while classmate Steve Beard (Middletown, Mass.) also had four hits on the day, including three knocks in the opener and an RBI triple in the nightcap. Junior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and sophomore Michael Welch (Westfield, Mass.) each pitched six innings to record victories for the Panthers. PSU improves to 16-15 overall, while Colby-Sawyer drops to 13-15.
Plymouth State scored six times in the first inning to open the game. The team recorded five singles and turned three free passes into runs. Sophomore Dan Armstrong (Danville, N.H.) had a two-run single to highlight the inning.
The Panthers added an unearned run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single from McIntosh. Beard had a team-best three hits and two runs scored.
Runnals threw six shutout innings to earn his fourth win of the season (4-1). Freshman Joe Marino (Averill Park, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
PSU jumped in front 3-0 in the nightcap in the top of the third, turning four walks into three runs. Sophomore Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) drew a bases-loaded walk, and freshman Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) brought home a run with a suicide squeeze play.
Colby-Sawyer got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when junior Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.) scored on a wild pitch, but the Panthers responded in their next at bat with a run on Beard's RBI triple to the right field fence.
PSU tacked on two more in the top of the seventh as freshman Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) and senior Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, N.H.) had back-to-back run scoring singles. Broom, McIntosh and junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) each recorded two hits in the game.
Welch improved to 2-0 on the season after giving up just one run on five hits while striking out four. Junior Spencer Webb (Warwick, R.I.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Colby-Sawyer will host Lyndon State on Monday for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at 2:00 pm. Plymouth plays a Little East Conference contest at Keene State Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
