PSU Baseball pulls out win over Castleton

Four-run ninth inning lifts Panthers to victory

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) lined a two-run double down the left field line to cap a two-out, four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday afternoon as Plymouth State University pulled out a dramatic 12-11 victory over Castleton State College in a non-conference baseball game at Panther Park.

The game was a see-saw battle all afternoon.  Castleton took a 6-0 lead by the second inning before PSU rallied to tie the game at 7-all in the fourth.  The Panthers pulled ahead 8-7 in the fifth inning, but the Spartans came back with one in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth to take an 11-8 into the bottom of the ninth.

Things looked grim for PSU after the first two batters were retired in the ninth inning, but junior Rob Madonna (Cranston, R.I.) gave the home team some life with a two-out single through the left side.  Senior Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass.) followed with an RBI double to right center, scoring Madonna, and senior Dave Tammaro (Cheshire, Conn.) kept the rally alive with an RBI single to center, scoring Beard.  Junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) drew a walk to put the potential game-winning run on base, and Thompson delivered the game-winning hit to score Tammaro and Cox.

Madonna finished with three hits and two RBI for PSU, while Cox and junior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) had two hits apiece, with Cox cracking his second home run of the year.  Tammaro, Cox and sophomore Justin Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) drove in two runs apiece.

Sophomore Connor Hoagland (Grandville, N.Y.) led the Spartans with a double, a home run and four runs batted in, while senior Cameron Curler (Vergennes, Vt.) had three hits and drove in two.  Juniors Matt McNamee (Pawling, N.Y.) and Macyn Clifford (Brookline, N.H.) collected two hits apiece.

PSU used four pitchers in the game, with sophomore Josh Young (Somersworth, N.H.) picking up the win in relief.  Junior Spencer Webb (Warwick, R.I.) pitched 4.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one earned run while striking out four.

Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action Saturday with a doubleheader against the University of Massachusetts Boston.  The games will be played at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass.  Castleton plays a non-conference game Thursday at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
