Plymouth State Baseball takes two from Colby
Runnals, Regan strong on the mound for Panthers
WATERVILLE, Maine. – Junior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) pitched a complete game in the opener and classmate Tucker Regan (Niantic, Conn.) pitched five innings for the victory in the nightcap Sunday afternoon to help the Plymouth State University baseball team to 6-2 and 4-2 non-conference wins over Colby College at Coombs Field.
The Panthers move back over the .500 mark at 19-18 overall, while the Mules fell to 9-20.
Runnals struck out four, walked none, and allowed seven hits in the first game to improve his record to 5-1. Regan gave up two runs on three hits and no walks in the second game while striking out five. Junior Ryan Wakefield (Sanbornton, N.H.) worked the seventh inning for his second save.
Sophomore Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) had five hits on the day to lead the PSU offense, including three hits and two RBI in the nightcap. Freshman Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) also had three hits and an RBI in the second game.
Plymouth State scored three runs in the first inning of the opener to take early control. Senior Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to start the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) walked, classmate Rob Madonna (Cranston, R.I.) singled to drive in the first run, Hall doubled to bring in another, and Thompson singled to make it 3-0.
The Panthers scored two unearned runs in the second inning when Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, N.H.) reached by error to start the inning. Beard followed with a double, senior Ryan McIntosh (Lincoln, N.H.) singled to bring in Cosgrove and Cox hit a sacrifice fly to score Beard. Thompson tripled with one out in the third inning and scored on a two-out single by Cosgrove for a 6-0 margin.
Colby scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Starks (Milton, Mass.) led off with a single and later scored on the fifth triple of the season by Jason Buco (Methuen, Mass.). Colin Cummings (Ashburn, Va.) had an RBI groundout to bring in Buco.
Cosgrove, Madonna, and Thompson all had two hits, one run, and one RBI for the winners. Starks and Alec Finigan (Milton, Mass.) both had two hits for Colby.
In the second game, the Panthers had a lone run in the first inning when a hit batter, a single, and a walk loaded the bases. Hall followed with a single to bring in McIntosh, but Colby was able to get out of the inning with no more damage.
Hall had a two-out double in the third inning and Thompson followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 margin. Plymouth State scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth after Madonna reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice by Hall. Thompson, who had three hits and two RBI in the game, smacked a double to plate Madonna.
The third run was big because Colby scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nathan Ellis (Milton, Mass.) singled to lead the inning off, moved to second when Daniel Csaplar (Winchester, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, and both runners moved up one base on a wild pitch. Christopher Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) had a two-run pinch-hit single to cut the lead to 3-2.
In the sixth, Beard reached by error and later scored from third on a squeeze bunt by McIntosh.
Plymouth State wraps up the regular season with three games this week, a single non-conference affair Wednesday at Middlebury College, and a Little East Conference doubleheader Friday at Panther Park against Rhode Island College.
