Panthers wrap up regular season Friday at home
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College scored four runs in the second inning and six in the third Wednesday afternoon on its way to a 12-9 win over Plymouth State University on Forbes Field.
John Luke went 3-for-4 to pace Middlebury (10-17), while Driscoll finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Alex Kelly, Kyle Finck and Steven Bodine each had two hits in the game, while Merryman and Rafferty each drove in a pair.
Freshman Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) finished 2-for-5 with three RBI for Plymouth State (19-19), while sophomore Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) and junior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) each had a pair of hits.
Plymouth State took a 3-0 lead in the first, sparked by a two-run single to right by Hall. Middlebury plated a run in the bottom of the inning before PSU added three more runs in the second. A two-run triple to left center by senior Ryan McIntosh (Lincoln, N.H.) was the key hit in the inning.
Middlebury answered in the bottom of the stanza with four unearned runs on three Panther errors. Tom Rafferty drove in a pair with a single to left.
Plymouth added a run in the third to take a 7-5 lead before the Panthers of Middlebury struck for six runs on four hits in the bottom of the third. A two-run single to left by Tom Driscoll drove in two of Middlebury's runs as they took an 11-7 lead. The first three innings were lengthy, taking 1:37 to play.
PSU chipped away in the sixth, scoring a pair including an RBI triple to left center by junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.). Middlebury added to its cushion in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to right by Hunter Merryman, making it a 12-9 game.
Sawyer Olson picked up his first career win, allowing one run and three hits over 3.1 innings of work. Joe MacDonald closed out the game in the ninth to earn the first save of his career.
Junior Zach Cogswell (Allenstown, N.H.) threw 4.1 innings of effective relief for PSU, allowing just one run on four hits.
Middlebury returns to action Saturday at Bowdoin before hosting Tufts on Sunday. Plymouth State will wrap up the regular season Friday at Panther Park with a Little East Conference doubleheader against Rhode Island College (noon).
