YAPHANK, N.Y. – The Plymouth State University baseball team wrapped up its trip to New York with a doubleheader split Monday night against SUNY Maritime, winning the first game 9-2 before dropping the nightcap, 3-2. The Panthers went 3-1 on the weekend trip.
Sophomore Patrick Cannon (Concord, N.H.) sparked the Panther offense with three hits in the opening game, including a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. Junior Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) also had two hits and knocked in two runs each. Junior Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, Mass.) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out five, to post the win on the mound.
Sophomore Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) had two hits to lead the Panthers in the nightcap, but PSU managed just five hits in the setback.
The Panthers took control of the opener with two runs in the second and fourth innings and four runs in the fifth, opening up an 8-0 lead. Freshman Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) and Hall ignited the first rally with lead-off singles; Krajewski came home on Broom's sacrifice fly and Hall scored on a double by Cannon. Krajewski capped the two-run fourth-inning with a two-out RBI single. The fifth-inning outburst included RBI singles by Broom and senior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) and run-scoring doubles by Cannon and junior Dan Armstrong (Danville, N.H.), as well as a couple Maritime errors.
The Privateers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the night cap on a two-run home run over the right centerfield fence by junior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.). Maritime tacked on a third run in the bottom of the third as junior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led off with a single, moved to third on back-to-back bunts, and scored on a groundout by freshman Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y.).
PSU put two runs on the board in the fifth inning. Cox and Thompson drew one-out walks and Hall singled to right to load the bases. After a pitching change, Krajewski walked to bring home Cox and after an infield pop-up, junior Justin Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) delivered a seeing-eye single to right to score Thompson.
Senior Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) shut down the Panthers over the final 2.2 innings on two hits and two walks to post the win for the Privateers. Senior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) allowed three runs on four hits and no walks in five innings on the mound for PSU but suffered the loss. Senior Ryan Wakefield (Sanbornton, N.H.) struck out the side in relief in the sixth inning.
The Panthers are back on the diamond next week during the team's spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla. The first games are a doubleheader against SUNY Plattsburgh on Sunday, Mar. 16 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
