Regan tosses two-hit shutout to lead Panthers
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Tucker Regan (Niantic, Conn.) fired a two-hit shutout Sunday afternoon as the Plymouth State University baseball team split a doubleheader with Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) in the Gene Cusic Classic.
Regan struck out six batters in a complete-game seven-inning effort in the opener as PSU won, 6-0, and freshman Austin Karls (Severna Park, Md.) had two hits and three runs batted in. Plattsburgh came back to win the nightcap, 8-5.
Regan retired the first 10 batters he faced in the opener before giving up a one-out single in the fourth inning. He struck out the next two batters to retire the side, and allowed just three base-runners the rest of the way on a hit, a walk and a hit batter.
The Panthers got all the runs they would need with two in the second inning. Freshmen Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) and Karls were hit by pitches to reach base, and sophomore Mike Laflamme (Bedford, N.H.) brought them home with a two-run double to left. Krajewski and sophomore Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) ignited a rally in the fourth inning with lead-off singles, and Karls followed with a two-run double to left of his own. Karls then capped off the scoring in the fifth inning with an RBI single to right.
PSU took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap when Krajewski cracked a triple to right center field with a man on, and then came home on an infield error. The Cardinals broke the game open, though, with four runs each in the third and fourth innings.
The Panthers made a comeback in the seventh inning, scoring three runs. Junior Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) knocked in a run with a single to center, and Hall brought home two with a double to left, putting runners at second and third and bringing the tying run to the plate with one out. But a Plattsburgh reliever got the next two batters to fly out to end the game.
PSU, 4-2, will play another doubleheader in Fort Myers on Monday against Lasell College, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
