PSU Baseball posts split against Lasell
Arsenault pitches Panthers to win in nightcap
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Curtis Arsenault (Berlin, N.H.) allowed just one earned run over five innings Monday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University baseball team to 7-3 victory over Lasell College in the second game of a doubleheader in the Gene Cusic Classic.
Arsenault scattered eight hits and a walk while striking out five, departing with a 5-2 lead. Senior Ryan Wakefield (Sanbornton, N.H.) worked the final two innings for PSU, allowing one run while striking out five to earn his first save. The win earned PSU a split of the twinbill as Lasell won the opener, 4-1.
The top three hitters in the Panther batting order, sophomore Patrick Cannon (Concord, N.H.), junior Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine) and senior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.), had two hits apiece in the nightcap, and sophomore Mike Laflamme (Bedford, N.H.) drove in a pair.
With the score tied at 2-2 after four innings, PSU pulled ahead with two runs in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Cox had an RBI single to key the fifth inning rally, and Laflamme knocked in runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Lasers got to PSU junior Josh Young (Somersworth, N.H.) for four runs in the first inning of the first game, but Young settled down after that. He retired 14 straight batters from the second to the sixth inning, and ended up with a complete-game effort, allowing just two singles over his final six innings.
PSU managed just one run and six hits off Lasell starter Greg Sherman. Cannon led the Panthers with a walk and two hits, including a double. PSU plated its only run in the fourth inning when juniors Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) and Dan Armstrong (Danville, N.H.) reach on two-out singles and freshman Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) delivered an RBI double.
PSU, 5-3, will play another doubleheader in Fort Myers on Tuesday against NYU Polytechnic, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
