PSU Baseball sweeps doubleheader from NYU-Poly

Reny and solid pitching spark Panthers to victories in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine) cracked three hits and drove in four runs and senior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and freshman Connor MacRae (Newburyport, Mass.) were impressive on the mound Tuesday as the Plymouth State University baseball team swept a doubleheader from NYU-Poly, 9-2 and 3-1, in the Gene Cusic Classic.

Reny drove in his four runs in the opener on a pair of hits, including a two-run double in the third inning that put PSU up, 4-0.  He also drove in a run in a five-run Panther rally in the sixth inning that put the game away. Sophomore Patrick Cannon (Concord, N.H.) also reached base three times for PSU and scored two runs, including a lead-off triple in the first inning and scoring on an infield grounder by Reny.

The first six Panthers to come to the plate in the sixth inning reached base with hits.  After junior Dan Armstrong (Danville, N.H.) and freshman Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) singled, sophomore Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) hit an RBI double and freshman Austin Karls (Severna Park, Md.) followed with a two-run single. Sophomore Mike Laflamme (Bedford, N.H.) and Reny kept the rally going with singles, and senior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Runnals earned his first win of the season (1-1), pitching 5.2 innings and giving up two runs on three hits and three walks, striking out three. He allowed just three base-runners in the first five innings on a walk, a hit and an error before the Blue Jays rallied for a pair in the top of the sixth. Senior Zach Cogswell (Allenstown, N.H.) came on in relief with PSU up 4-2 and the tying runs on base, getting the final out of the sixth inning before retiring the side in the seventh to record his first save.

MacRae earned his first win in his first career start in the second game, allowing just three hits and two walks and a seventh-inning unearned run. He struck out eight batters, including three in the seventh as he finished off his complete-game effort.

The Panther offense managed single runs in the second, third and seventh innings to pull out the win. Junior Justin Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) singled home a run in the second, Reny doubled and scored on a single by junior Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) in the third, and Walsh tripled and scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a single by sophomore Justin Judd (Lebanon, N.H.)

PSU, 7-3, will return to the diamond Friday, Mar. 21, with a twinbill against Augustana College, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
