Babson edges Plymouth State Baseball
Armstrong, Thompson provide highlights for Panthers
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Freshman Jacob Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) scored the go-ahead run on a delayed steal of home in the bottom of the sixth inning, and classmate Ken Rotunno (East Islip, N.Y.) tossed three scoreless innings to earn his first career save helping Babson College defeat Plymouth State University, 4-2, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its seventh win in the last eight games, Babson is now 8-6 on the year, while Plymouth drops to 10-5 overall.
Junior Nick Malatos (Milton, Mass.) earned his first victory of the season for the Beavers, giving up two runs on six hits over six innings. He was also the recipient of a triple play after allowing a walk and a single to start the third inning. Freshman Kevin Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Green and White, while junior Chris Warren (Medfield, Mass.) reached base twice and scored a pair of runs.
Plymouth State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of two-out runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Patrick Cannon (Concord, N.H.), who reached with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a passed ball, scored on Armstrong's single to left, and Thompson, who drew a two-out walk, came home on a single to left by Krajewski.
After having just two batters reach base over the first four innings, Babson rallied to tie the game with a pair of runs in the fifth. Warren drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, and moved to third on an infield single by freshman Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.). Warren came home to cut the deficit in half on a wild pitch, and Murphy plated Shea to tie the game with a two-single to right center.
Senior Sean Lanahan (Avon, Conn.) reached on a fielding error with two outs in the decisive sixth inning before Weiss came on to pinch run. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, followed by a walk to junior Joe Zanca (Braintree, Mass.) to put runners on the corners. Weiss was able to race home on a delayed steal after Zanca got caught in a run down to put the hosts in front 3-2.
The Beavers tacked on an insurance run as Warren walked and later scored on an error in the seventh, and Rotunno shut Plymouth State down over the final two innings, allowing just one base runner to secure the victory.
Senior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) took the loss for the Panthers, allowing two earned runs on just four hits while striking out four in six innings on the hill.
Both teams return to action on Thursday as Babson hosts Roger Williams at 3:30 p.m. and Plymouth State travels to Rivier for a 7 p.m. start.
