PSU Baseball edges Castleton in 12 innings

Laflamme drives in winning run for Panthers

CASTLETON, Vt. – Sophomore Mike Laflamme (Bedford, N.H.) singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the 12th inning Tuesday afternoon, and Plymouth State University went on to defeat Castleton State College, 3-2, in a non-conference baseball game at Spartan Field.

LaFlamme slapped a single just past the outstretched glove of Castleton second baseman Taylor Vile and into center field, bringing home junior Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine) with what turned out to be the winning run. Castleton couldn't bring around a run in the bottom of the frame and suffered the one-run loss. PSU has won six of its last seven to improve to 20-14, while Castleton slips to 25-9.

Reny and sophomore Patrick Cannon (Concord, N.H.) had three hits apiece to lead PSU and junior Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) collected two as PSU belted out 12 hits but left nine runners on base.  Joe Borowski went 1-for-2 with four walks and a run scored for Castleton.

Plymouth State threw four different hurlers at the Spartans, with Spencer Webb (Warwick, R.I.) earning the win. The senior tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while shutting down the Spartans in the extra frames.

Both teams scored single runs in the second inning. Senior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) walked with one out and went to third on Reny's double down the left field line before scoring on an infield ground out. Castleton answered in the bottom of the frame when Nate Swahn led off with a single, moved around to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, and came home on Vile's infield grounder.

Plymouth State took a one-run lead in the seventh when Cannon drove in Reny with an RBI single. Castleton answered in the bottom of the frame yet again, stringing together three hits to drive in a run. Borowski singled to center, Dan Errico ripped a double down the left field line, and Macyn Clifford lifted a single into shallow center to tie the game at 2-2.

Castleton had several chances to seal the victory with a run in the extra innings, but couldn't manufacture the winning score. Plymouth State opened the top of the 12th with a pair of singles by Reny and senior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) to put runners on first and third. Castleton pulled off a double play as Cannon lined out to second base, where Vile doubled up the runner at first. With two down and Reny on third, LaFlamme stepped up and hit a single to center to drive in the game-winning run.

PSU returns home to host Middlebury College on Wednesday in a non-conference game at Panther Park. Castleton will travel to Norwich on Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Cadets, their final games of the regular season. The Spartans will host the NAC Tournament on May 2 as the tournament's top seed.
