Panthers look to regroup, back in action on Friday
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Plymouth State University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Edgewood College (Wisc.) Tuesday in the Gene Cusic Classic, 12-3 and 9-2.
Edgwood captured its first two victories of the season as the Eagles improve to 2-4, while PSU falls to 1-5 this spring.
PSU plated all three of its runs in the first game in the seventh inning on just one hit. A pinch-hit single by freshman Peter Esposito (Cranston, R.I.) and a pair of walks loaded the bases, and two infield errors by Edgewood brought home three Panther runners.
Sophomore Eric Leitch (Lanesboro, Mass.) led the Panthers with two hits, while junior Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine) had a double in three at bats. Sophomore Connor MacRae (Newburyport, Mass.) started and worked five innings, striking out five, but took the loss.
Senior Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) and freshman Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) each had two hits to pace PSU in the nightcap, and Thompson and freshman Zach Brandt (Belmont, Mass.) drove in a run apiece. Brandt hit a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to score a run, and Thompson added a sixth-inning RBI single.
After six games in the past three days, PSU will have two days off before returning to action Friday at 9:00 a.m. in Fort Myers with a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin Platteville.
