Ninth-inning drama lifts Thoroughbreads over Panthers in nightcap
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Plymouth State University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Skidmore College Monday morning in the Gene Cusic Classic, falling by scores of 3-1 and 5-4.
Skidmore improves to 3-1 on the season while PSU drops to 1-3.
The Thoroughbreds plated two runs in the top of the first inning of the opener and that would turn out to be all they needed. They tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning right before PSU scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth when junior Dan Armstrong (Danville, N.H.) led off with a double and classmate Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine) drove him home with a one-out RBI triple.
Senior Josh Young (Somersworth, N.H.) was solid in his first start of the season, allowing three runs on four hits in five-and-two-thirds innings, striking out four. Freshman Ryan Perro (Glen Head, N.Y.) went the rest of the way and did not allow a run.
Skidmore led the nightcap 3-1 heading into the final inning, but PSU rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. Junior Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) singled home freshman Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) to cut the deficit to one run, and junior Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) delivered a two-out two-run double to put the Panthers in the lead.
The advantage was short-lived though, as Skidmore rallied with two outs and no one on base. A single and a walk was followed by a two-run game-winning double by Matt Barra.
Junior Matt Doxter (Somersworth, N.H.) went six innings for PSU, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven, earning a no-decision.
PSU will play another doubleheader in Fort Myers on Tuesday against Edgewood College of Wisconsin, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
