Tufts pulls out win over PSU Baseball

Krajewski, Armstrong post two hits each for Panthers

NORTHBORO, Mass. – Sophomore RF Oscar Kutch had an RBI single and scored in the middle of a three-run fourth inning Wednesday afternoon which propeled the Tufts baseball team to a 6-4 victory against Plymouth State University at the New England Baseball Complex.

The Jumbos had just six hits, but benefited from five Plymouth State errors while improving to 12-4 overall. Kutch and freshman Stephan White led Tufts with two hits each. Junior SS Matt Moser scored twice.

Junior catcher Dan Armstrong (Danville, N.H.) was 2 for 4 with a run to lead Plymouth's eight-hit attack. Sophomore DH Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) finished 2 for 4 and junior LF Mike Laflamme (Bedford, N.H.) scored twice and knocked in a run. The Panthers fell to 4-9.

Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead in the second when senior 1B Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) led off with a single and scored on Laflamme's base hit. PSU had four hits in the inning and left the bases loaded.

The Jumbos tied it with an unearned run in the bottom of the second. Moser led off with a walk, took second on a passed ball and eventually scored on an infield error. The Jumbos had a chance to add more with runners on first and third with one out, but could not. Tufts manufactured its 2-1 lead in the third. Freshman 3B Tommy O'Hara drew a one-out walk, took second on a hit by pitch, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Moser's sacrifice fly.

A Jumbo miscue helped the Panthers score twice in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Armstrong led off with a single to right and was sacrificed to both second and third. He scored when Laflamme reached on a Tufts error. A single by freshman CF Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) brought Laflamme around.

With runners on first and second and one out in the fourth, Kutch laced an rbi single to center giving the Jumbos a 4-3 lead. An infield error scored the second Tufts run and a ground out by senior catcher Bryan Egan scored Kutch making it 5-3.

In the top of the seventh, Laflamme reached on a fielder's choice and stole second for Plymouth. He took third on a wild pitch and scored on a failed pick-off attempt to pull the Panthers within 5-4.

Tufts added an insurance run when Moser reached on an infield error to lead off the seventh.  A single by White and a sacrifice by junior 1B James Howard moved Moser to third from where he scored on a ground ball by sophomore 2B Tom Petry.

The Jumbos used six pitchers, with senior Tom Ryan picking up the win. Sophomore Rory Ziomek and freshman Zach Brown both pitched perfect innings. Brown struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.

Junior starter Matt Doxter (Somersworth, N.H.) took the loss for Plymouth, giving up three hits, six walks and five runs (three earned). Sophomore Josh LeBlanc (Rindge, N.H.) and senior Josh Young (Somersworth, N.H.) both pitched two innings and did not give up earned runs.

PSU's game Thursday at Babson has been postponed. The next games for the Panthers are in a Little East Conference doubleheader against Western Connecticut State University, which are slated for Sunday, Apr. 5, at Purchase College in Purchase, N.Y.
