PSU Baseball comes back to defeat Babson

Four-run rally lifts Panthers to non-conference win

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Freshman Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) drove in the go-ahead run as part of a four-run eighth inning Friday afternoon as visiting Plymouth State University rallied to defeat Babson College, 7-5, in non-conference baseball action at Govoni Field.

With the win, Plymouth State is now 5-9 overall, while Babson drops to 8-7 on the year.

Sophomore Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Panthers, while junior Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) added a pair of hits. Sophomore Eric Leitch (Lanesboro, Mass.) and freshman Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) each had a hit and drove in a run in the win.

Senior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) went 4-for-5 to lead the Beavers. Sophomore Owen Shea(Northborough, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while classmate Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs batted in.

The home team jumped on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first as sophomore Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) was hit by a pitch and Shea walked to start the frame. Senior Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) singled to load the bases, and Halpin came through with a two-run single.

After getting out of trouble with a double play, Plymouth State responded with three runs in the top of the second. Leitch drove in Krajewski with a one-out double to right center, and junior Mike Laflamme (Bedford, N.H.) followed with an RBI single to plate Mancini. Laflamme stole second to get into scoring position, and then came around on a groundout by junior Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) to make it 3-2.

Halpin walked and later scored to tie the game in the bottom of the third, and the Beavers tacked on a run in each of the next two innings to build a two-run lead. Weiss led off the fourth with a walk and came all the way around from first on a double by Shea, and junior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) scored on senior Rob Caggiano's (Medford, Mass.) fielder's choice to make it 5-3.

After working out of a jam in the top of the third, Babson freshman Teddy Carey (Upton, Mass.) allowed just two base runners over his final four innings of work, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced before leaving after the seventh inning. The bullpen was unable to hold the lead though, as the Panthers took advantage of an error, a hit batsman and a walk to load the bases with nobody out in the eighth. Krajewski then tied the game with a two-run single to right, Ruziak plated senior Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) with the go-ahead run one batter later, and Mancini's sacrifice fly brought home Krajewski with an insurance run to give Plymouth State a 7-5 edge.

Babson had the tying run on base with one out in both the eighth and ninth innings, but senior Josh Young (Somersworth, N.H.) worked out of the jam each time to earn his first save of the season.

Sophomore Connor MacRae (Newburyport, Mass.) earned his first win of the year, giving up one earned run on just two hits in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen. Senior Michael Welch (Westfield, Mass.) started and allowed four runs on eight hits in three innings of work.

Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action this Sunday against Western Connecticut State University with a doubleheader that will be played at Purchase College in Purchase, N.Y.
