Panthers take nightcap to earn first conference win

            MEDFORD, Mass. – The Plymouth State University baseball team jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held on for a 7-6 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday afternoon in the second game to earn a split of their Little East Conference doubleheader at Tufts University's Huskins Field. The Corsairs took the opener, 14-2, in eight innings.

            PSU recorded its first LEC win of the season in the nightcap as the Panthers improve to 7-12 overall and 1-5 in conference games. The Corsairs are now 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the Little East.

            After UMD pulled to within one run (7-6) after six innings of the nightcap, PSU senior Josh Young (Somersworth, N.H.) shut down the Corsairs over the final three innings to record his second save. Young three three innings of no-hit, one-walk baseball while striking out four. He came on in relief of senior Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, Mass.), who worked the first six innings and recorded his second win of the season.

            Senior Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) led off the game for UMD with a home run, but PSU took the lead with two runs in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) and an RBI single by sophomore Eric Leitch (Lanesboro, Mass.).  PSU tacked on four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double by junior Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) and an RBI double by senior Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.)

            UMD plated four runs on just two hits in the fifth inning, and PSU got it right back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by sophomore Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.), which turned out to be the game-winning run.

            PSU managed just two runs on four hits in the opener of UMD junior Steve Colella (Leominster, Mass.) The Panthers got their first run in the third inning when Leitch led off with a walk, went to third on an error and a wild pitch, and scored on an infield grounder. They got another run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by sophomore Mark Ruiz (Framingham, Mass.)

            The Panthers are right back in action Sunday with a doubleheader at Brandeis University, beginning at 10:00 a.m. UMD will return to action at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, when the Corsairs host Babson College at New Bedford High School.
