PSU Baseball rallies past Rivier with three runs in ninth

Panthers to host Framingham in home opener on Friday

NASHUA, N.H. – The Plymouth State University baseball team overcame 3-0 deficit in the late innings Thursday evening to pull out a 4-3 victory over Rivier University in non-conference action at Holman Stadium.

Down 3-0 after seven innings, PSU rallied with one run in the eighth inning and three unearned runs in the ninth. Junior Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) started the comeback for the Panthers in the eighth inning when he was hit by a pitch with one out. Hall advanced to third on a single by sophomore Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) and scored on an infield error by the Rivier defense.

Hall delivered an RBI single for PSU in the three-run ninth inning. There were more problems with the Raider defense as three throwing errors led to the three-run rally.

PSU's comeback spoiled an impressive performance by Rivier starter Nick Pica (Hampstead, N.H.) Pica kept the Panthers scoreless for 6.2 innings, allowing just six hits and two walks while striking out 12.

The Panthers received a solid start from freshman Ryan Perro (Glen Head, N.Y.), who pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs while fanning six. Sophomore Dallas DeFrancesco (Meriden, Conn.) picked up his first win of the season after throwing three hitless innings in relief, striking out three.

Krajewski had three hits for the Panther offense, and sophomore Eric Leitch (Lanesboro, Mass.) collected two hits, including a double.

Prior to the beginning of the game, both universities honored the late Brian E. Colbert who passed away in December. All monies at the gate tonight went directly to Brian E. Colbert Memorial Foundation.

PSU, 8-15 overall, will play its home opener Friday at Panther Park, hosting Framingham State University in a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m.  Rivier (10-17) will be back at Historic Holman Stadium Friday night as it hosts the University of Maine-Presque Isle at 7:05 p.m.
