Welch and Greenleaf toss complete games for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University baseball team scored 16 runs on 18 hits Monday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Lyndon State College, 9-3 and 7-4, at Panther Park.
PSU snapped a four-game losing streak and upped its record to 14-23 on the season, while Lyndon State, which has alternated sweeps in five straight doubleheaders, drops to 10-24.
The Panthers got a pair of complete-game efforts on the mound as seniors Michael Welch (Westfield, Mass.) and Robbie Greenleaf (Lee, N.H./Oyster River) each went the distance. Welch earned his first win in over two years in the opener, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out a career-high nine batters. Greenleaf surrendered four runs on six hits and three walks in the nightcap, fanning four to improve his record to 2-0.
All nine Panther starters got at least one hit in the opener, led by junior Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine) and senior Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) with two hits each. Junior Dave Hall (Groton, N.H.) and freshman Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) each added a double and two runs batted in, and senior Justin Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) also knocked in two.
Freshman Collin Clark (Rutland, Vt.) went 3-for-3 with a double in the opener for the Hornets, while sophomore Andre Eason (Waterbury, Conn.) and junior Reece Tanguay (Essex Junction, Vt.) had two hits apiece and Tanguay drove in a pair.
PSU took control of the opener in the first inning by putting six runs on the board. Hall cracked a two-run double to right center, and sophomore Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) followed with an RBI double to left center. Ruziak scored a run with a sacrifice fly and Walsh and Reny added RBI singles.
Lyndon scored its three runs in the third and fifth innings. Tanguay singled home a run in the third and Eason and Tanguay delivered RBI singles in the fith.
The Panthers put up another big number in the first inning of the nightcap with a five-run rally. Sophomore Mark Ruiz (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Zach Brandt (Belmont, Mass.) had RBI singles in the rally, and sophomore Chris Underwood (Westford, Mass.) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
Ruziak cracked his first career home run for PSU in the second inning, just the second home run for PSU this season. The Panthers tacked on one more run in the fourth inning when Reny tripled and scored on a Ruziak groundout.
The Hornets got on the board with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Three singles loaded the bases in the fifth before Eason knocked in a run with a groundout and another came home on a passed ball. Sophomore Zach Hale (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) singled home a run in the sixth and classmate Billy Johnson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
PSU plays a non-conference game Wednesday at Middlebury College before wrapping up the regular season with a Little East Conference doubleheader Friday at noon at Panther Park. Lyndon State plays a North Atlantic Conference twin bill Tuesday at Colby-Sawyer College (2:00 p.m.)
