Krajewski and Bailey lead Panthers to win in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore Mike Bailey (Stratford, N.H.) combined for seven hits and six runs batted in Saturday and Plymouth State University held on to defeat Skidmore College, 9-8 in a college baseball game Gene Cusic Classic.
PSU built leads of 8-2 and 9-3 through eight innings and held on for the win despite a five-run ninth-inning rally by Skidmore. The Panthers are now 2-3 on the season, while this was Skidmore's season opener.
Krajewski had three hits and three RBI, including a double and a home run, while Bailey went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Senior Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) and sophomore Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) also collected two hits each, with Mancini contributing an RBI double.
The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on Krajewski's first home run of the season and an RBI double by Bailey. After Skidmore tied the game in the top of the sixth, PSU answered with two in the last of the sixth to take the lead for good. Bailey singled and took second on an error, and Mancini doubled to score Bailey. Mancini then came home on a pair of wild pitched.
PSU plated four more runs in the seventh, as Krajewski and junior James Garnett (Newport, R.I.) each singled in a run and Bailey knocking in two with a double. Krajewski doubled in an insurance run in the eighth inning, which turned out to be the difference in the game.
Junior Connor MacRae (Newburyport, Mass.) started for PSU and went five-and-a-third innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out six. Sophomore Dallas DeFrancesco (Meriden, Conn.) allowed just one earned run in three-and-a-third innings of relief, and sophomore Brady Larson (Brunswick, Maine) got the final out for his first save.
The Panthers are back on the diamond Sunday for a doubleheader against Amherst College, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
