Perro strong on the mound for Panthers
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Ryan Perro (Glen Head, N.Y.) allowed just two runs over seven-and-two-thirds innings Monday morning to lead the Plymouth State University baseball team to a 4-2 victory over North Park University in the Gene Cusic Classic.
Freshman Matt Decina (Hopkinton, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs to lead the Panther offense as PSU upped its season record to 3-5. North Park fell to 2-7.
North Park took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Caleb Layden. The Panthers came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning; sophomore Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) reached on an error and senior Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) singled to put two runners on, and after a double steal, Decina delivered a two-run single.
PSU tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning. Junior James Garnett (Newport, R.I.) singled and came around to score on a double by sophomore Mike Bailey (Stratford, N.H.), and Ruziak singled home Bailey.
Perro settled down after allowing the first inning run and didn't give up any more until the eighth, when James DeGeorge doubled and came home on a single by Cam Adams. Freshman reliever Cam Cossette (Milford, Mass.) struck out the next batter to end the inning, and sophomore Taylor Doyle (Peterborough, N.H.) pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.
After playing six games in four days, PSU will take Tuesday off and return to the diamond Wednesday at noon for a single game vs. Johns Hopkins University.
