Late rally lifts Panthers in opener, eight-run second inning in nightcap
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Plymouth State University baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Edgewood College (Wisc.) Thursday afternoon in the Gene Cusic Classic, taking the first game 6-5 and the nightcap, 16-3.
PSU won the opener with a two-out, four-run seventh inning rally, capped by a two-run single by sophomore Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.). The Panthers came back and scored 16 runs in the second game on 22 hits, including 11 extra-base hits. Junior Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) led the way, going 5-for-5 with two doubles and five runs batted in. Krajewski finished the day with eight hits, including three doubles, and seven RBI.
Also getting into the hit parade for PSU in the second game were juniors James Garnett (Newport, R.I.) and Eric Leitch (Lanesboro, Mass.) and sophomore Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.), who all had three hits. Riley Garnett had three doubles and two RBIs, Leitch had two doubles, and Frederick drove in three.
Edgewood scored four runs in the first inning of the opener to grab an early lead. PSU got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Krajewski, and scored a second run in the fourth inning when Frederick doubled and scored on a single by sophomore Mike Bailey (Stratford, N.H.).
The Panthers trailed 5-2 entering the final inning, but staged a huge comeback. Senior Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) led off with a single and scored on Krajewski's two-out double. Riley-Garnett was hit by a pitch and Frederick singled to load the bases; an infielder error plated one run, and Mancini ended the game with a two-run single.
Sophomore Taylor Doyle (Peterborough, N.H.) went the distance in the opener for PSU, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in seven innings, striking out five for his first win (1-1) of the season.
The Panthers scored one run in the first inning of the nightcap on a double by Leitch and a single by Krajewski, then put the game away with an eight-run second inning. Sophomore Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) started the rally with an RBI single; Krajewski and Frederick added two-run singles, and Mancini capped the rally with an RBI double.
A two-run double by Riley-Garnett and an RBI triple by Bailey highlighted PSU's three-run third inning that pushed the score to 12-0. Frederick added an RBI single in the fifth inning, while a sixth inning rally included an RBI single by Leitch and a two-run double by Krajewski.
Freshman Cam Cossette (Milford, Mass.) picked up his first victory (1-0) for PSU, allowing two runs without giving up a hit, striking out four. He was lifted in the fifth inning after issuing seven walks. Sophomore Kyle McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) and freshmen Sean Engel (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Alex Libby (Freeport, Maine) had effective stints in relief.
PSU is back on the diamond Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. with a single game against Lasell College.
