PSU Baseball drops final game in Florida to Nichols

Krajewski caps off strong week for Panthers

            FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Plymouth State University baseball team suffered a 10-7 loss to Nichols College Saturday morning on PSU's final day in the Gene Cusic Classic.

            Junior Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) led the Panthers with three hits, including a double, and three runs batted in. Sophomore Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) also had three hits, including a pair of doubles and three runs scored; junior James Garnett (Newport, R.I.) hit his third home run of the season, and sophomore Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) had a pair of hits and knocked in a run.

            Krajewski capped off an outstanding week for the Panthers, hitting safely in the last nine games with a .583 batting average (21-of-36), five doubles, a home run and 14 RBI.

            Freshman David Sampson (Bellingham, Mass.) had an outstanding start for PSU, allowing no runs and just two singles through six innings. The Bison scored two unearned runs off Sampson in the seventh inning on two hits and two errors, and Sampson departed after giving up three hits in the top of the eighth.

            PSU took a 2-0 lead over Nichols with single runs in the first two inning. Frederick doubled and scored on Krajewski's single to open the scoring, and sophomore Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) doubled and came home on Ruziak's RBI single in the second inning. The Panthers added three more in the third inning when Frederick singled, Krajewski doubled and Garnett cracked a two-run home run.

            The Panther added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings on a fielder's choice by sophomore Eric Leitch (Lanesboro, Mass.) and an RBI single by Krajewski, but Nichols roughed up the Panther bullpen for two runs in the seventh inning, six in the eighth and two in the ninth to complete the victory.

            PSU completes the Florida trip with a 4-7 record and a season mark of 5-8. The Panthers will return to action this Tuesday, Mar. 22, at Clark University (4:00 p.m.) in Worcester, Mass.
