PSU Baseball falls to Lasell in Florida

Frederick collects four hits to lead Panthers

             FORT MYERS, Fla. – A two-run double by Brett Sherron highlighted a four-run eighth inning Friday and Lasell College went on to defeat Plymouth State University, 9-7, on PSU's second-to-last day in the Gene Cusic Classic.

            Sophomore Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) recorded four hits to lead PSU's 12-hit attack, including a pair of doubles and an RBI. Senior Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) added two hits for the Panthers, and sophomore Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) cracked a two-run homer, his second of the season.

            Lasell took a 5-0 lead with one run in the first inning and a four-run rally in the third, as Sherron and Matt Haskell each had RBI doubles. The Panthers clawed their way back into the game, starting in the fifth inning when Broom tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.). A pair of Lasell errors led to two runs in the sixth inning and PSU knotted the game at 5-5 in the seventh on Mancini's two-run blast.

            Lasell took the lead for good in the eighth inning with four runs on four hits and an error. PSU got two of them back in the bottom of the eighth on RBI singles by junior Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) and Frederick. The Panthers put two runners on in the ninth but couldn't get the tying runs home.

            Senior Matti Doxter (Somersworth, N.H.) started and pitched the first five innings for PSU , suffering the loss (0-2).

            PSU, 5-7 overall, wraps up the Florida trip Saturday at 9:00 a.m. against Nichols College.
