Garnett erupts for five hits and seven RBI for Panthers

NASHUA, N.H. – The Plymouth State University baseball team posted a 27-hit attack Thursday afternoon, led by a 5-for-6 outing from James Garnett (Newport, R.I.), who racked up seven RBI including a three-run homer, as the Panthers topped host Daniel Webster, 26-9,  at Harvey Woods Field.

Garnett picked up his team-leading fourth round tripper of the season in the first inning, and went on to finish with three singles and a double to go with his homer. The Panthers were also aided by seven Eagle errors as they evened their season record at 9-9.

The 26 runs for PSU is the first 20-plus run output since a 24-5 win over Rivier in 2010, and the most runs in a game since sweeping a doubleheader at Western Connecticut on April 24, 1999, by scores of 24-5 and 29-4.

Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) continued to build upon his plus-.500 average going 4-for-6 with a double and knocked in one for the winners while Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) was 2-for-4, scored three runs and knocked in three including a two-run double in the second.

Mike Ryan (Bellingham, Mass.) finished 4-for-5, scoring four runs and knocking in two for the Panthers. Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) was 3 for 7 with a pair of doubles and two RBI and Jake Broom (N. Hampton, N.H.) was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and pushed two runs across.

DWC (5-9) was paced by Mike Pelletier (Pelham, N.H.) and Mark Ruiz (Framingham, Mass.) who were each 2 for 4 with two RBI. Pelletier connected for a two-run single in the eighth and Ruiz posted a two-run single in the first. Mike Gamache (Manchester, N.H.) added a two-run double in the eighth and Zack Cartwright posted a two-run double in the second.

Plymouth State led 4-2 after one and put up six runs in the second while DWC countered with two in the bottom of the frame for a 10-4 game after two. PSU tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth but then took control with a 10-run sixth on eight hits that included two costly Eagle miscues.

The Panthers would add two runs in both the seventh and eighth. DWC tacked on one in the fifth and four in the eighth.

Brady Larson (Brunswick, Maine) was credited with the win (1-0) with one inning of relief in the sixth. Jared Maloney (Nashua) took the loss (1-2).

The Eagles begin a three-game NECC weekend set on Saturday against Lesley playing a pair in Haverhill, Mass. beginning at 3:00 p.m. and conclude the set on Sunday (weather permitting) at DWC at 1:00 p.m.

PSU visits UMass Dartmouth on Saturday for the Little East Conference season debut, a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
