Mancini and Goulet lead Panthers to non-conference win
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) and freshman Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.) collected three hits apiece to lead a 19-hit attack Wednesday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Rivier University, 19-4, in non-conference baseball action at Panther Park.
Mancini cracked a double, a triple and a home run to finish a single shy of hitting for the cycle, driving in five runs, while Goulet had two doubles among his three hits and two RBI. Senior Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) and sophomore Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) drove in two runs each for the winners and juniors Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) and James Garnett (Newport, R.I.) had two hits apiece.
Senior Frederick O'Brien (South Boston, Mass.) led the visitors with two hits, while junior Drew Neely (Lakeland, Fla.) and senior Jeremy Ball (Swanzey, N.H.) each drove in a run.
PSU took control of the game early on, scoring five runs in the first inning and four more in the third. The Panthers scored at least one run in their final four at bats, plating five in the fifth inning, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Rivier scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and ninth innings.
Neely gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly, but the Panthers answered with a five-spot in the bottom half of the inning. Frederick brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, and Garnett singled in a run. Mancini drilled a two-run triple to center field, and Goulet followed with an RBI double.
After Rivier got one back in the third inning on a balk, PSU pushed its lead to 9-2 with four runs in the bottom of the third. Mancini cracked a two-run double to left center, Goulet added another RBI two-bagger, and sophomore Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) drove in a run with an infield grounder.
Mancini homered to lead off the Panther sixth inning, and the Panthers scored two more runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Freshman Mike Ryan (Bellingham, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for PSU with an RBI single in the eighth.
Freshman Cam Cossette (Milford, Mass.) earned the win on the mound for PSU, working six innings and allowing just three runs on three hits and two walks, striking out six. Sophomore Dallas DeFrancesco (Meriden, Conn.) and freshmen Jacob Scheinman (Plymouth, N.H.) and Dylan Gaita (Melrose, Mass.) each pitched one inning of relief.
PSU, 15-14, returns to the diamond Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Panther Park with a make-up game against Framingham State University. Rivier, 9-21, plays a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader Saturday at Albertus Magnus, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
