PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The University of Massachusetts Boston recorded 11 hits in both ends of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon and swept a Little East Conference baseball twin bill from Plymouth State University, 8-6 and 9-7, at Panther Park.

The Beacons extended their winning streak to 10 games, improving to 23-12 overall and moving into a tie for first place in the LEC at 8-4 in conference play. PSU drops to 18-18 overall and 6-6 in the Little East.

The Panthers were led by sophomore Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.), who hit a home run and drove in five runs on the afternoon, and sophomore Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the nightcap.

GAME 1 – UMB 8, PSU 6

The teams traded back-to-back three run innings in the middle of the game to turn a 1-0 UMB lead into 7-6 margin. PSU started the onslaught in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on an RBI single by junior James Garnett (Newport, R.I.) and a two-run double by Mancini. The Beacons answered in the top of the fifth when the first five batters reached base, including RBI singles by freshmen Ryan Olivo (Rochester, N.Y.) and Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) and a bases-loaded walk to classmate Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.).

The Panthers answered right back with three more in the last of the fifth, as senior Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, junior Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) doubled in a run, and junior Eric Leitch (Lanesboro, Mass.)delivered an RBI single. The Beacons took the lead for good with three more in the top of the sixth as Boudrias knocked in two with a bases-loaded single to right and freshman Charlie Huegi (Sandy Hook, Conn.) added another with an infield grounder. A sacrifice fly by junior Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) accounted for the final Beacon run.

Freshman Bobby Tramondozzi (Peabody, Mass.) earned the win in relief with a four-inning stint, allowing three runs on three hit. Classmate Manny Garcia (Boston, Mass.) pitched a perfect ninth to record his sixth save. Senior Matti Doxter (Somersworth, N.H.) started and went 4.1 innings, and sophomore Taylor Doyle (Peterborough, N.H.) worked the final 4.2 innings and took the loss.

GAME 2 – UMB 9, PSU 7

The visitors took an early 3-0 lead in the nightcap, scoring one run in the first inning on two errors and a wild pitch and adding two more in the third on a two-run home run by junior Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.)

PSU rallied with six runs in the fourth inning, five coming on home runs. Krajewski and Garnett started the rally with back-to-back doubles. After a single by Leitch, Mancini knocked one over the left field fence for his fifth of the season, and following a single by freshman Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.), Ruziak bashed his first home run of the season to left.

UMB came back to tie the game at 6-6 with three runs in the seventh inning on a three-run homer to straight-away center field, and scored the game-winning runs in the eighth on a two-run home by sophomore Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.).

Each team scored once in the ninth, but Garcia closed out the game for UMB for his second save of the day and seventh of the season.

PSU freshman David Sampson (Bellingham, Mass.) pitched the first six innings for PSU, and sophomore Ryan Perro (Glen Head, N.Y.) took the loss in relief.

Plymouth State plays a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Lyndon State College before wrapping up the regular season next Friday at Panther Park against Western Connecticut State University. UMB is back in action Sunday with a single game at Endicott College.
