Sampson named Rookie of the Week for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A freshman pitcher on the Plymouth State University baseball team was recognized Monday with a top weekly honor from the Little East Conference (LEC) for his performance in a key Panther game last week.
Freshman David Sampson (Bellingham, Mass.) was named LEC Baseball Rookie of the Week after helping the Panthers clinch a berth in the Little East Tournament last Friday. Sampson posted a victory over Western Connecticut State University in the regular-season finale at Panther Park.
A 6-4 right-hander, Sampson took the ball with an LEC post-season berth on the line, and pitched six-and-a-third innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and three walks, striking out four. The rookie hurler had a no-hitter through four innings before being touched for an infield single with two outs in the fifth, and departed the game in the seventh inning with a 5-2 lead; PSU went on to win, 10-2.
Sampson completed the regular season with a 2-1 record in 10 appearances (seven starts) with a 3.51 earned run average and 43 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. He leads the Panther starters in ERA and ranks 11th in the LEC in both ERA and strikeouts.
The Panthers wrapped up the regular season with a 20-20 overall record and a 7-7 mark in the LEC, tied for fourth place. PSU will be the #4 seed in this week's double-elimination LEC Tournament at #1 seeded University of Massachusetts Boston, and will face #3 seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (17-20, 8-6) in Game 3 on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
