Panthers play Thursday vs. Western Conn. in Game 5
BOSTON – Senior Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) limited fourth-seeded Plymouth State University to one run on six hits over eight innings Wednesday evening as third-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Panthers in Game 3 of the Little East Conference Baseball Tournament at Monan Park, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Chouinard struck out 10 batters and improved his record to 5-1 with his performance. UMD will play again Thursday at 7:00 p.m against fifth-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University, which upset #2 seeded University of Southern Maine 13-6 earlier on Wednesday. PSU will face elimination in its game at 3:30 p.m. Thursday vs. #6 seeded Western Connecticut State University, which upset top-seeded UMB in the first game of the tournament, 4-3.
Down a run heading into the ninth inning, PSU nearly tied the game off UMD sophomore reliever Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) A walk to junior James Garnett (Newport, R.I.) and a Corsair error gave PSU runners at first and second with one out, and a passed ball advanced both runners. After the second out of the inning, senior Mike Laflamme (Bedford, N.H.) drew a pinch-hit walk to load the bases, but Cronin got the final out on an infield grounder for his seventh save.
PSU got strong pitching performances from senior starter Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and senior reliever Matti Doxter (Somersworth, N.H.) Gilchrist allowed just one run on five hits in five innings, striking out five, and Doxter gave up one run on one hit in three innings, fanning four.
The Panthers scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning. Sophomore Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) reached base on an error by the catcher after a strikeout, and then stole second base. Ruziak went to third on a hit by senior Justin Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.), and scored on a single up the middle by sophomore Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian). Walsh had two of PSU's six hits in the game.
UMD tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. A walk and two singles loaded the bases with no outs, and Gilchrist gave way to Doxter on the mound for PSU. A wild pitch by Doxter allowed one run to score before the Panther reliever go the next three batters on infield outs to prevent further damage.
The Corsairs took the lead in the last of the eighth. Sophomore Ervin Kantardzic (Roslindale, Mass.) singled, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch.
