PSU Baseball falls to Salem State

Garnett, Ruziak provide highlights for Panthers

            SALEM, Mass. – Jose Martinez (Lawrence, Mass.) pitched six solid innings and Andrew Deloury (Andover, Mass.) added a grand slam Wednesday afternoon as Salem State University defeated Plymouth State University 14-3.in non-conference baseball action at the Central Campus Field.

            Martinez allowed just one run on four hits and three walks with one strikeout in the win for the Vikings, who improve to 13-12.

            Senior James Garnett (Newport, R.I.) and junior Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) had two hits and an RBI each to lead the Panthers, who are now 10-8.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

* Plymouth State opened the scoring with a run in the second. Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) walked and after advancing to third on a base hit, scored on an RBI single by Ruziak.

* Salem State tied the game in the third on an RBI fielder's choice by Dan Connors (Danvers, Mass.) and took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on back-to-back run scoring doubles by Andrew Deloury (Andover, Mass.) and Colton Fontaine (Newburyport, Mass.). The Vikings increased their lead to 4-1 in the fifth as Joe White's (Bellingham, Mass.) single to center drove in Connors.
* Martinez settled in, scattering three hits through five, and was rewarded when Deloury blasted a grand slam to left in the fifth as Salem State opened up an 8-1 lead.
* PSU starter Geoff Kayo (Londonderry, N.H.) went 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts in the loss. Ryan Perro (Glen Head, N.Y.) and Tyler Brown (Littleton, N.H.) combined to allow five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in relief for the Panthers.
* White and Joe Kasper (Lynn, Mass.) made the score 10-1 in the sixth on back-to-back base hits. The Panthers scratched across a run in the seventh on and RBI groundout by Ryan Richard (Berlin, N.H.).
* Garnett closed the scoring with an RBI double in the ninth to make the final 14-3.

NEXT GAME

Salem State hosts Endicott Thursday at 3:30 p.m. while Plymouth State is at UMass Dartmouth Saturday for a Little East Conference twin bill at noon.
