Richard posts three-hit game for Panthers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Ryan Richard (Berlin, N.H.) went 3-3 and drove in a run but the Plymouth State University baseball team fell to Augustana (Ill.) College, 10-3, in a game at Player Development Complex #3 on Sunday morning.

The Panthers (2-1) pounded out ten hits, but were only able to scrape together three runs against the Augustana (11-3) staff.

Junior Tyler Shemick (Foster, R.I.) gave up six runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out four over 4.1 innings in his first start of the season.

The Vikings tagged Plymouth's defense for five runs over the first three frames while keeping the Panthers off the scoreboard. After a single and fielder's choice, sophomore Jake Huber (Homer Glen, Ill.) doubled up the middle to plate the first run of the game in the top of the first.

The Panthers picked up a pair of hits in the bottom of the frame, but a double play and line out stranded Richard at first base.

A two-out rally sparked Augustana's offense in the second. Senior Matt Loeffl (Grayslake, Ill.) opened the inning with a double before stealing third. Shemick looked poised to strand the runner in scoring position after fanning the next two batters, but senior Jack Hallmark (Englewood, Colo.) drove in the runner with an RBI single. Another single put runners on the corners and a PSU error at third base scored both and the Vikings led 4-0.

Hallmark plated another Augustana run with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0 in the third.

The Panthers got on the board in the fourth. Richard singled and stole second, but was erased after being picked off. With two outs senior Mitch Sytulek (Raymond, N.H.) worked a walk to keep the inning alive, and sophomore James Salta (Laconia, N.H.) tripled to plate PSU's first run. A strikeout stranded Salta at third, though.

The Vikings pushed four more runs across in the fifth on a fielder's choice, bases loaded walk and two-run double by senior Tyler Nunez (Byron, Ill.).

Plymouth clawed away at the lead in the bottom of the inning. Singles by senior Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) and junior Geoff Kayo (Londonderry, N.H.) put runners on first and second with two out. Richard singled to score Ruziak, but was thrown out while advancing to second to end the inning.

Augustana scored an unearned run in the seventh and Plymouth was held off the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore Andrew Salta (Laconia, N.H.) led off the inning with a walk and sophomore Jimmy Zimolka (Londonderry, N.H.) followed with a single. Junior Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice that retired Zimolka at second base, but scored Salta. The inning ended with a strikeout to give Plymouth its first loss of the year.

Freshman Matt Hoban (Westminster, Colo.) earned his second win of the season, tossing six innings while giving up two runs on eight hits.

Richard had three hits for the Panthers and Goulet reached base three times with two singles and a walk. Freshmen Trevor Delesdernier (East Lyme, Conn.) and Will Austin (Sunapee, N.H.), and senior Kyle McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) combined to throw 4.1 innings for PSU, allowing just five hits and an unearned run.

Plymouth State will play two games against St. Lawrence University on Monday, with game times set for 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
