PSU Baseball drops second game to Old Westbury

Kayo, Sytulek and Zimolka post multi-hit games for Panthers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – SUNY Old Westbury struck for five runs in the second inning on the way to a 9-3 win over Plymouth State University in a non-conference baseball game on Thursday morning.

Plymouth State (5-3) had plenty of opportunities but fell for the second straight game to Old Westbury, who improved to 6-4-1 with the win.

The Panther offense struck out just four times on the day, but left 13 runners on base. Senior Kyle McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) took the loss on the hill for PSU, going four innings while giving up six runs on six hits. PSU left two runners in scoring position in the first, second and fourth innings.

Old Westbury opened the scoring in the second inning. Freshman Peter Capel (Hicksville, N.Y.) singled to right field before classmate Mike Manetta (Farmingdale, N.Y.) doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Freshman Dom Kriegel (Massapequa, N.Y.) roped an RBI double to score the first two runs of the game.

After a hit batsman, senior Jesse Russo (Westbury, N.Y.) singled to load the bases. A walk forced in the third run, and junior John Fogarty (Westbury, N.Y.) doubled into the right field gap to score two more.

Old Westbury scored another in the fourth after Fogarty reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error allowed senior David Hawley (Freeport, N.Y.) to score.

Three more runs came across in the fifth as Old Westbury went ahead 9-0. Senior Dean Sheridan (Huntington, N.Y.) led off with a single and moved to second after a base knock from Manetta. A fielding error loaded the bases, but PSU cut down a runner at the plate on fielder's choice and a strikeout nearly ended the inning, but consecutive singles drove in three more runs.

Plymouth got all three of its runs in the top of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Gavin Cook (Littleton, N.H.) walked to reach base with one out. Junior Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.) grounded into a fielder's choice, but was safe after a throwing error. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, and freshman Joe Routhier (Nashua, N.H.) walked to load the bases. Sophomore Andrew Salta (Laconia, N.H.) drew a pinch-hit walk to score the first run before brother James Salta (Laconia, N.H.) followed with a pinch-hit single to score Goulet from third. Freshman Andrew Wasilefsky (Willington, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice to score Routhier from third for the final Panther run of the ball game.

Andrew Salta doubled to lead off the final top of the ninth, but the following three hitters were retired to end the game.

Junior Alex Libby (Freeport, Maine) pitched the final four innings, giving up three runs on five hits while fanning three. Freshman Ryan Dunbar (Selden, N.Y.) picked up his first win of the season (1-1) for Old Westbury, tossing 7.1 innings while giving up three runs on nine hits.

The Panthers face Denison University (12:00 p.m.) and #7/#9 The College of Wooster (3:00 p.m.) on Friday (Mar. 23).
