Goulet homers as Panthers bang out 11 hits
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.) homered and singled but the Plymouth State University baseball team fell to Denison University, 15-3, in a game at Player Development Complex on Friday morning.
Plymouth (5-4) topped the Big Red (9-5) by a 7-5 score on Wednesday, but it was all Denison in the latest match-up.
Denison erupted for nine runs through the first four innings. The Big Red tagged junior starter Tyler Shemick (Foster, R.I.) for three runs in the first on two walks, two hit batsmen and a single. Denison loaded the bases and a walk forced in the first run of the game. Two batters later sophomore Brian McAuliffe (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) singled to plate two more.
Plymouth got one run back in the bottom of the frame. Goulet and sophomore Geoff Kayo (Londonderry, N.H.) singled to start the inning. A groundout from junior Ryan Richard (Berlin, N.H.) moved both runners into scoring position and senior Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) scored Goulet with a sacrifice fly.
The Big Red added a run in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth to pull away, 9-1. Plymouth scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but were looking for a bigger inning. Frederick started the inning with a base hit and, after a fly out, sophomore Ben Curry (Hampstead, N.H.) followed with a single of his own. Senior Luke Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and sophomore Jimmy Zimolka (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in a run with an infield grounder. Another groundball on the infield ended the Panther rally with a pair of runners left on base.
Goulet smacked his first home run of the season to start the bottom of the fifth and cut the deficit to 9-3. After an out, Richard and Frederick recorded back-to-back base knocks but again the rally was snuffed following a pair of groundballs on the infield.
Denison tacked on six more runs through the final three innings to cruise to the victory. PSU had a runner at third with two out in the bottom of the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth but the Big Red were able to close out the win.
Goulet finished the game two-for-four and scored two of the three Panther runs. Frederick added a pair of hits of his own but PSU left 11 runners on base. Shemick gave up four runs on four hits and three walks in two innings of work. He struck out three.
McAuliffe and senior Sam Frazen (Kansas City, Mo.) combined for eight of Denison's 15 RBI in the win. Senior righty Perley Provost (South Bend, Ind.) posted his third win of the season, going seven full innings while giving up eight hits and three runs and fanning four.
Plymouth will face nationally-ranked College of Wooster later today. The Fighting Scots are #7 in the latest D3baseball.com poll, and hold the #9 spot in the most recent American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) poll.
