Zimolka posts three-hit game for Panthers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Jimmy Zimolka (Londonderry, N.H.) was a perfect three-for-three at the plate as the Plymouth State University baseball team gave #7/#9 College of Wooster all it could handle in a 7-5 setback at the Player Development Complex on Friday afternoon.

Senior David Sampson (Bellingham, Mass.) took the loss on the hill for the Panthers, giving up just three earned runs while fanning two in his 5.1 innings.

The Fighting Scots got on the board in the bottom of the first, plating two runs on three hits. A double and single set up sophomore Dan Harwood (Brecksville, Ohio), who knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to center. Two batters later, junior Garrett Crum (Alliance, Ohio) roped an RBI single to score the second run.

The PSU deficit remained 2-0 until the third when Wooster struck for three more runs. Harwood stroked an RBI double to center and senior Drew Tornow (Painesville, Ohio) scored two more with a two-out double.

Plymouth rallied in the top of the fifth. Zimolka drew a leadoff walk and scored a batter later when senior Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) doubled to center. Sophomore Geoff Kayo (Londonderry, N.H.) grounded out to score Ruziak from third to make it a 5-2 game.

Wooster got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Crum's fly ball scored junior Jacob Stuursma (Hudson, Ohio), who had opened the inning with a walk.

Zimolka set up the seventh inning with a leadoff single. After stealing a base, junior Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.) moved him to third with a productive infield out. Junior Ryan Richard (Berlin, N.H.) singled to right to score Goulet, and senior Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) walked to load the bases. Freshman Ben Curry (Hampstead, N.H.) singled through the right side to score two more, pulling the Panthers to within 6-5.

Wooster loaded the bases after two quick outs in the bottom half, but freshman Will Austin (Sunapee, N.H.) worked out of the jam by inducing a ground ball to third.

With one out in the top of the eighth Zimolka beat out an infield grounder for his third hit of the game, but a pair of fly outs ended the inning.

The Fighting Scots tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning. Senior Jake Fling (Norton, Ohio) singled to start the inning. He was bunted to second and junior Michael Wielansky (St. Louis, Mo.) worked a walk. After a fly ball for the second out of the inning, an error and bases-loaded walk made it 7-5.

Richard stroked a one-out single to center in the ninth. He moved to second on a passed ball, but a popup to short and comebacker ended the Panthers' comeback hopes.

Plymouth has dropped four straight to fall to 5-5 while Wooster improved to 8-3. Zimolka reached base in all four of his plate appearances (three singles, one walk), and he added two runs scored and a steal. Sampson surrendered six runs, but just three earned, in his 5.1 innings. He dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

Junior Brian Murray (McLean, Va.) was the winning pitcher for the Fighting Scots, going six innings while allowing just here hits and giving up two earned runs to improve to move to 2-0 on the year.

The Panthers will wrap up the Florida portion of their schedule with a rematch against Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. PSU kicked off the Spring Break trip with a 10-inning, 12-11 win over the Blue Jays on Mar. 17. The setback helped drop JHU, ranked #21 in the country at the time, out of the national rankings.
