PSU Baseball drops game to Keene State

Routhier drives in two as Panthers fall to Owls

KEENE, N.H. – Freshman Joe Routhier (Nashua, N.H.) drove in a pair of runs but Keene State College used a five-run third inning to top Plymouth State University, 8-4, in a Little East Conference (LEC) baseball game at the Owl Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon.

Plymouth State got single runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to overcome the early deficit. With the loss PSU drops to 10-14 (3-6 LEC), while Keene State improves to 14-14 and 4-5 in conference action.

Freshman Marc Phinney (Gloucester, Mass.) worked around baserunners in the first two innings, getting double play balls in each, before running into trouble in the third. With runners on second and third and just one out he induced a ground ball and shortstop Geoff Kayo (Londonderry, N.H.) was able to freeze the runners before getting the out at first, but the next four batters all reached. A two-run single, walk, RBI double and two run single put the Owls up 5-0.

The Owls got another run in the fourth with a one-out, RBI single from junior Nate Rossi (Hampstead, N.H.), but PSU catcher Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) gunned down the runner stealing third and a fly out ended the inning.

Plymouth State got on the board in the fifth. Sophomore Ben Curry (Hampstead, N.H.) reached on an infield single, then stole second and Routhier poked a two-out single to right to cut the deficit to 6-1.

KSC got the run right back with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the inning, but Plymouth scored again in the sixth. Sophomore Jimmy Zimolka (Londonderry, N.H.) ripped a double to left center, moved to third on a ground out and came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Ryan Richard (Berlin, N.H.).

The Panthers loaded the bases with none out in the seventh after a pair of KSC errors and hit batter. After an infield line out, Routhier brought home a run with a sac fly to right, but that was all they would get.

Keene added asacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-3. PSU loaded the bases again in the top of the eighth on a Kayo walk, Richard single and a walk to junior Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.), but a strikeout, fielder's choice and ground out left the Panthers with just a single run.

Plymouth got a pair of base runners in the ninth courtesy of two KSC walks, but were unable to cash in.

Goulet (single, walk) and Kayo (two walks) both reached base twice, while Zimolka had a double. Phinney (0-3) took the loss after surrendering six runs over 3.1 innings. Graduate student Dallas DeFrancesco (Meriden, Conn.), sophomore Alex Larson (Brunswick, Maine), freshman Trevor Delesdernier (East Lyme, Conn.) and junior Alex Libby (Freeport, Maine) were solid in relief, combining to throw 4.2 innings while allowing just one earned run.

The two teams will play again on Tuesday (Apr. 24) at Panther Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
